Why are women underrepresented in physics departments?

We estimate that only a few percent of high school girls take advanced physics classes in Japan. Girls’ parents worry about their daughter’s marriage prospects if she hopes to pursue physics at university. Is there a strong conservative social norm acting to keep women out of this and other STEM fields? We are gathering data and evidence to achieve our goal of removing any social barriers to girls’ STEM participation.
