The University of °®¶¹´«Ã½Deepens Academic and Talent Engagement in India
Executive Vice President, Professor Kaori Hayashi’s visit underscores Japan’s growing education and innovation partnership with South Asia

New Delhi, India — [5th Dec’25] — The University of °®¶¹´«Ã½(UTokyo), Japan’s leading national university and a global pioneer in research and innovation, is deepening its engagement in India as part of the Government of Japan’s Study in Japan (South Asia) initiative. The visit of Professor Kaori Hayashi, an Executive Vice President of UTokyo, marks a new chapter in advancing academic collaboration, research partnerships, and student mobility between Japan and India.

The visit is hosted by UTokyo's educational partner O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU). JGU's Vice Chancellor Dr. Raj Kumar and EVP Hayashi will be making visits to Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru to meet with higher education leaders, policymakers and prospective students to strengthen academic linkages and explore new opportunities for collaboration between the two nations. This comes as U°®¶¹´«Ã½and Acumen, who provides UTokyo’s In-Country Representatives, continue to build and expand the Study in Japan initiative for India and South Asia.

Rising Interest in Japan Among Indian Students
This visit comes amid an unprecedented surge of Indian interest in studying in Japan, driven by Japan’s expanding English-taught programs, world-class research ecosystem, and strong employability outcomes. The country’s reputation for safety, affordability, and innovation-led education is making it a preferred choice for Indian students at a time when traditional destinations face tightening visa regimes and geopolitical uncertainty.

“Japan warmly welcomes the growing number of talented Indian students who aspire to study, research, and build their futures in Japan. Indian students bring a unique blend of creativity, curiosity, and global outlook that enriches our campuses and strengthens our research collaborations. We also wish to send our students to India so that they can learn from the nation’s great history and exciting advances it is making. We see tremendous opportunity in deepening these education and talent linkages between our two nations,” said Professor Kaori Hayashi, Executive Vice President, The University of Tokyo.

Expanding Study in Japan Outreach
Under the Study in Japan (South Asia) initiative led by U °®¶¹´«Ã½and supported by Acumen, outreach across India has scaled rapidly over the past year. The initiative has engaged with 120+ schools, reached 100+ cities, and conducted 150+ events (virtual, hybrid, and in-person), directly connecting with over 25,000 students interested in studying in Japan.

A major catalyst for this momentum is Navi Japan, the Study in Japan (South Asia) digital gateway, developed and managed by Acumen. In just two months since launch, Navi Japan has recorded 15,000+ downloads, 150,000+ in-app engagements, and 3,800+ live student chats, and with a 76% student engagement rate it has enabled Indian students to interact directly with Japanese universities and current students.

Of the 150 cities across India that Navi Japan has users from, much of this engagement is emerging from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, reflecting Japan’s growing visibility as an accessible and aspirational destination for students beyond major metros.

Building Future Pathways for Talent and Collaboration
Navi Japan provides verified, comprehensive information on Japanese universities, scholarships, and visa procedures, alongside student testimonials, peer support, and real-time updates—making it a trusted platform for Indian students exploring opportunities in Japan.

Japan’s higher education ecosystem is also evolving to align closely with global aspirations—through enhanced industry integration, stronger scholarship visibility, and increased English-medium offerings.

“During my previous visits to India, I have been deeply inspired by the diversity, ambition, and warmth of the Indian academic community. The enthusiasm of students and educators alike reflects the tremendous potential for collaboration. Japan is committed to nurturing this partnership—not only through education and research but through genuine friendship and mutual growth,” added Professor Hayashi.

Strengthening Indo-Japan Friendship Through Education
The University of Tokyo’s leadership in advancing Study in Japan (South Asia) reflects Japan’s commitment to creating a transparent, globally aligned, and inclusive higher education ecosystem. As both nations continue to expand collaboration across research, innovation, and talent exchange, education remains a cornerstone of the deepening Indo-Japan partnership.
