Abstract

The body politic has, since the Middle Ages, provided an enduring analogy in Europe for describing the ‘right’ kind of political organisation. In this talk I explain how this analogy was turned inside out by the scientific discoveries made around the real body in 16th and 17th centuries Europe. I show how the emergence of the body as a focal point for the Scientific Revolution was coextensive with the rise of a new kind of political organisation, the state.
